ARCHIVED - Carrefour supermarkets in Spain apply price cap to 200 basic products
The catalogue of cut-price items in Spain includes eggs, milk, oil and cereals

The price of virtually everything has gone up in Spain over the last 12 months but one area where it’s most noticeable is in the supermarket. Although the government reduced the VAT rate on certain products at the beginning of the year, most stores have raised their prices so consumers are still feeling a major pinch every time they go grocery shopping.
According to the statistics, French supermarket chain Carrefour has hiked up its prices considerably in the last couple of months but it’s now making up for it, implementing a price cap on more than 200 staple items in its stores across Spain, as it has already done in France.
The Bank of Spain is confident that food costs will continue to soar so to mitigate this, Carrefour has launched a new offer called ‘The lowest prices’, which is a catalogue of hundreds of basic products at bargain rates. The list includes all the most common family purchases like preserves, eggs, milk, rice, legumes, potatoes, oil, cereals and cleaning products.
Between January and February, food became 1.31% more expensive overall, and at the end of last month, a basket of very basic shopping items came in at 30 euros.
Of course, supermarkets aren’t immune to inflation and while Mercadona and Dia dropped their prices by 0.13 euros and 1.23 euros, respectively, others, like Carrefour (+2.13 euros), El Corte Inglés (+0.78 euros) and Alcampo (+0.39 euros) substantially ramped up the costs.
But even if the government’s VAT reduction has proved a little disappointing, it’s still pulled grocery prices down by a decent 10.9% since the end of December, when a basic shop would have set you back 33.67 euros.
