ARCHIVED - Carnage in Cartagena on San Juan with burning bins and police altercations
Police in riot gear quickly and peacefully resolved the disruptions that erupted in several Cartagena neighbourhoods
When the Region of Murcia should have been enjoying the return of the San Juan bonfires and parties after two years of the pandemic, the celebrations in Cartagena descended into scenes of chaos with dozens of police and firefighters tasked with dispersing unruly crowds and dousing blazing bins and street furniture.
On Thursday night, June 23, tensions ran high in many areas of the port city where garbage containers were overturned and burned, glass canopies were shattered and numerous confrontations between civilians, many of them minors, and police were reported.
Dozens of officers were deployed to different neighbourhoods to prevent acts of vandalism against vehicles and homes, with the most trouble caused in the Molinos and Marfagones, Nueva Cartagena and the Jose Maria de la Puerta areas. In the early hours of the morning, agents supported by the Local Police and Guardia Civil established security perimeters so that the fires wouldn’t spread, and officers in full riot gear kept the peace while being pelted with wheelbarrows and other dangerous objects.
The disruption occurred as a backdrop to Monday’s scenes of violence in the Mediterráneo Urbanisation, when 12 local and national officers were attacked by several locals after neighbourhood complaints about noise in a square. One of the detainees is in provisional prison and two others have been released with charges.
On the other hand, the Cartagena City Council has reported that the traditional festivities were an overall success, and there were no incidents relating to the beach bonfires despite a strong wind. Around 30 small bush fires had to be tackled due to firecrackers.
The Councillor for Security, Juan Pedro Torralba, thanked the work of Firefighters, Civil Protection, Local Police, National Police and Guardia Civil:
"The night of San Juan is always complicated and due to the coordinated action of all the bodies involved, there were no serious incidents and the altercations that occurred were resolved as quickly as possible."
