Caravaca spruces up its streets with a colourful new mural
Several pieces of urban art have already been commissioned in Caravaca de la Cruz
The latest endeavour to spruce up the public streets of Caravaca de la Cruz comes in the form of a vibrant new mural at the bus stop on Los Andenes-Gregorio Sánchez Romero Avenue, featuring eye-catching designs that celebrate the town's rich history and culture.
Local artists Miriam Rubio and José Alberto López created the mural as part of the Youth Department's efforts to promote emerging talent and raise awareness about the Municipal Urban Art Ordinance.
Mayor José Francisco García, along with councillors José Santiago Villa and Salvador López, visited the mural and expressed their excitement about the project's impact on the community.
Mayor García highlighted the significance of collaborating with the regional government to further transform public spaces into artistic hubs. He also mentioned that improvements at the bus stop will continue with the installation of a permanent public restroom module in the next few weeks.
The newest artwork is added to the urban pieces painted at the Francisco Fernández Torralba Sports Complex, in the Pavilion of Archivel, in the Barranco de San Jerónimo and in different parks throughout the municipality.
The Youth Councillor added that "through these initiatives, we seek to show that urban art, or what is popularly known as graffiti, has nothing to do with the concept of uncivil graffiti that disfigures the environment."
Caravaca de la Cruz City Council passed its first graffiti regulation in 2021, setting a precedent for municipalities nationwide. The law establishes a registry of graffiti artists, provides a list of designated spaces for murals, and supports competitions and events that integrate art into the environment. By embracing street art, the city hopes to revitalise neglected areas and foster a thriving cultural scene.
