ARCHIVED - Calpe flies the flag for recycling on the Costa Blanca
The Marina Alta town in Alicante province has been awarded the Ecovidro Green Flag as the “most committed” recycler in Valencia region
The coastal town of Calpe has been awarded the Green Flag for “the municipality that has shown the greatest involvement” in a glass recycling campaign organised by Ecovidrio, a non-profit organisation responsible for managing glass packaging waste in Spain.
Calpe received the highest score of the 40 Valencian towns that took part in this year’s Green Flags Movement, which rewards not only an increase in glass recycling but also the level of involvement by the council and local hospitality industry.
The town achieved 2,805 points, ahead of the region’s second Green Flag winner El Campello, which gained 1,610 points.
The Ecovidrio campaign took place throughout July and August to raise awareness of the importance of recycling and separate glass collection containers.
“Thanks to the recycling of glass at the containers over the summer, the participating municipalities in the Valencia region have managed to avoid the emission of more than 5,600 tons of CO2 into the environment – the equivalent of removing 2,600 vehicles from ciruclation for a year,” said campaign organisers.
Calpe Mayor, Ana Sala, thanked businesses and residents for “continuing to help the town’s recycling rates”, thereby “helping to fight climate change”.
Elsewhere in the province, Alicante has installed dozens of recycling bins adapted for use by the elderly, people with reduced mobility and the visually impaired.
