ARCHIVED - Calls for Covid passport office in Torrevieja to overcome digital divide
Los Verdes (Green party) want a Covid certificate management point in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province, to help those without internet access
In a bid to reduce congestion in health centres and assist people who do not have access to the internet or printers, Torrevieja's Green Party has put forward a proposal to the Town Hall to set up a Covid Passport management point in the municipality where certificates can be downloaded and printed off.
The designated office would also offer other kinds of administrative services and facilities.
Aware of the "large number of families who do not have the electronic means to download the certificate", Los Verdes in Torrevieja argue that the proposal would "help these people and help to decongest the management in health centres, preventing crowds".
Other towns in the Valencia region, such as El Campello, Valencia and Elche already offer this type of service so that elderly and vulnerable people can download the Covid passport that came into force on Saturday December 4.
"There are people in various situations of vulnerability, as well as elderly people who do not handle new technologies well and do not have relatives or acquaintances in the area who can perform this task for them. In addition, not everyone has technological means in their homes, [so] the management point would help overcome the digital divide," explained Israel Muñoz, spokesman for Los Verdes de Torrevieja.
On Monday, the regional Ministry of Health reported the highest number of new Covid cases since July, with 6,696 new infections and 11 deaths over the weekend, and all those who are not yet immunised are being urged to do so.
The Valencia region will begin vaccinating children aged five to 11 in schools this week, with parents and guardians given just one day to authorise the immunisation.
