Cabo Roig urbanisation planted with 100 trees designated for other neighbourhoods
The new greenery should have been shared out between La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Punta Prima
The scrub land in the quiet residential area of La Regia, located just over the main blue bridge from Cabo Roig’s iconic strip, is well on its way to becoming a forest after almost 100 trees were planted in and around the dirt track.
Local residents were more than a little bemused when dozens of saplings were placed in such a small, little used area, but it turns out this was actually a bit of a mistake. Far from being an initiative by an environmental organisation, the work was actually commissioned by a Murcian company whose contract, signed 19 months ago, stipulated that it would have to improve the Orihuela Costa’s parks and playgrounds.
But far from centering around La Regia, the agreement, worth 121,000 euros, called for the “renovation of playgrounds and adaptation of green areas in Punta Prima, Cabo Roig and La Zenia. It should have included 713 new shade trees and ten new children’s games in busier family spots.
Ciudadanos councillor Luisa Boné is up in arms over the error, claiming it was previously agreed that the trees should be planted in three specific spots: the Punta Prima viewpoint (next to the church), Calle Mistral in Cabo Roig and the Cala Cerrada park in La Zenia. All of these areas are popular with families throughout the year but have little or no shade to speak of.
Echoing the concerns of baffled La Regia residents, the councillor also pointed out that the new saplings are unlikely to survive where they are, "on land where they do not have irrigation, compared to the parks indicated by the contract.”
There’s an equally good chance that heavy rains will wash them away, she added.
On top of this sizeable blunder is the fact that the contract for trimming Orihuela Costa’s palm trees still hasn’t been awarded. The streets leading to all of the area’s beaches are lined with these enormous specimens which haven’t been properly cut back in years. As a result, their sticky fruit has been allowed to spill onto the footpaths, causing a dangerous slip hazard.
"In many cases, pedestrians are forced to walk on the street, with the consequent danger of being run over," the Cabo Roig and Lomas-Orihuela Costa Neighbourhood Association (AVCRL) explained.
