ARCHIVED - British base jumper crashes into building during extreme world championship in Benidorm
The Gran Hotel Bali in Benidorm hosted the two-day World BASE Jumping championships this week
A British base jumper was at the centre of a truly heart-stopping moment during the world championships in Benidorm when he crashed into a building during a 180º turn and fell.
As has been the case for almost a decade, Benidorm's Gran Hotel Bali - the tallest building in Europe with 56 floors and 186 metres high - hosted the event that attracts the best base jumpers from around the globe.
However, things took a dramatic turn on the first day of qualifiers on Wednesday April 26, when British jumper Rich Mall smashed into a building and fell to the ground in Calle Langrero.
Thankfully, he managed to "rescue" the situation somewhat, but was taken to Marina Baiza Hospital in an advanced life support ambulance with non-serious injuries.
The competition involves jumpers leaping from a platform at the top of the hotel to fall into a target, and this year, 22 of the best took part.
Jumpers score higher the closer they land to the centre of the target and if the parachute, which must open at a specific time, does not rotate during the jump.
The rest of the qualifying rounds and exhibition jumps, in which two parachutists jumped at the same time from the highest columns of the building performing acrobatics, went smoothly.
The semi-finals and grand final took place on Thursday April 27, with the crown going to British jumper Thomas Berryman who finished ahead of Spaniard Abraham Hernández and American jumper, Justin Bietler, respectively.
