British teen tourist stabbed in Tenerife after chasing thief
The 18-year-old was knifed in Playa de las Américas after pursuing a man who had violently robbed his friend
An 18-year-old British holidaymaker is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed during a night out in one of Tenerife’s busiest resort areas. The teenager was attacked in the early hours on Monday February 16 in the Las Veronicas nightlife zone of Playa de las Américas, a strip packed with bars, clubs and late-night crowds. He had reportedly run after a man who had “violently robbed” a British female friend’s mobile phone, catching up with him in an area behind a bar before being stabbed.
A regional emergency response centre later confirmed: “An 18-year-old man has been seriously injured after being stabbed in Rafael Puig Lluvina Avenue in Playa de las Américas. The first emergency calls were received at 2.13am this morning.”
Ambulances and medical teams were sent to the scene, which at that time was still busy with late-night revellers. Paramedics stabilised the victim at the roadside before taking him by ambulance to Hospiten Sur, where he is understood to be receiving specialist care. One local report has described his condition as “critical.”
He is believed to have been attacked near a bar called Oasis, in a part of the resort that is especially popular with British tourists. The knifeman fled, and so far there have been no reports of any arrests. Police have opened an investigation and a specialist unit has been assigned to identify and locate the attacker. Officers are examining CCTV footage from nearby premises and speaking to witnesses who were in the area at the time.
The case has raised fresh concern about violence in such a busy nightlife zone, even though incidents of this severity remain relatively rare. In a separate case in July 2024, another British man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed in Playa de las Américas.
