British resident's death sparks shock and protest at El Portús campsite
Tragic loss of ‘grandmother of the campsite’ highlights eviction fears and distress

Shock and sadness have gripped the campsite, where many residents are struggling with the pressure and uncertainty caused by ongoing eviction processes. “They’re the grandparents of the campsite. They’ve been here a long time, but Margaret couldn’t bear this situation any longer. Living constantly in fear of losing your home, you can’t live like this. Most of the remaining residents are coping with antidepressants,” said Rosa Llopis, a neighbour.
The couple rarely left their home in recent years due to constant fear of eviction. Neighbours explained that “we always had to stay home for fear of not being able to return,” reflecting a widespread anxiety within the community about suddenly losing access to their homes.
Local business owners, like the proprietor of nearby Casa Ramírez restaurant, recall the Stewarts as well-liked figures. “They were both very good people, well known and liked by everyone. It’s a real shame what happened,” said the restaurant owner.
The El Portús campsite has been under new ownership since 2023, with measures taken to enforce regulations that prohibit permanent residence in such tourist sites. Negotiations and pressures to vacate have continued for over two years, with only a few families, including the Stewarts, remaining. According to the campsite management, the couple had a closer relationship with the owners and had been offered alternative housing options outside the site.
The Cala Morena Association, a local residents’ group, expressed profound dismay at Margaret's death and described the couple’s home as a place where they had hoped to spend their final years with dignity. The association called for a rally on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the main entrance to Cala Morena to support Collin Stewart, pay tribute to Margaret, and demand justice and accountability for the pressures faced by residents.
Cartagena City Council said Social Services had monitored the Stewarts’ situation since mid-2024 and attempted assistance, but the couple declined help and stayed firm on their position.
This heartbreaking event highlights the difficult and emotional consequences faced by long-term residents caught up in regulatory and ownership disputes, raising important questions about community, security, and the right to a home.
