British man remanded in custody over fatal fight in Tenerife nightlife hotspot
23-year-old suspect will remain behind bars while police continue investigating the death of a fellow British tourist
A British man arrested following the death of another British holidaymaker during a fight in Tenerife has been remanded in custody without bail. The 23-year-old appeared before a court in Arona on Saturday, where a judge ordered his provisional imprisonment while the investigation continues. According to the Canary Islands High Court of Justice (TSJC), the case is being treated as an alleged homicide.
The incident happened during the early hours of Thursday morning in Las Verónicas, the busy nightlife district of Playa de las Américas that attracts thousands of visitors every year.
A 37-year-old British man died after becoming involved in a confrontation with another British man. Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save his life.
Following his arrest, the younger man was brought before the court on Saturday to give evidence. After the hearing, the judge ordered that he be held in prison without bail pending further enquiries.
Witness reports indicated that security staff working in the area managed to restrain the suspect before officers from the Policía Nacional arrived.
The case has once again focused attention on safety concerns in Las Verónicas, an area that has frequently been criticised for late-night violence, drunken disturbances and crime linked to nightlife tourism in southern Tenerife.
The investigation remains ongoing and no further details about the circumstances surrounding the fight have been released by the authorities.
