British man dies of heart attack during triathlon in Torremolinos
The man died during the World Triathlon Championship which was held in the south of Spain
A British man was among two athletes who suffered heart attacks in Málaga this Thursday October 17. The two men died minutes apart from one another during the competition. The local media of Torremolinos have named the Brit as Mark John, aged 57. The second victim was Roger Mas, 79, from Mexico.
Both men were competing as veterans. The athletes were facing a 750-metres swim, a 12-mile cycle and a three-mile run. It has been reported that Mr John fell ill, collapsing on the ground during the initial part of the run.
People around were quickly on the scene and trying to resuscitate him. However nothing could be done to save him. Just moments before Mr John suffered a heart attack, Mr Mas has als suffered a heart attack while partaking in the swimming part of the triathlon.
World Triathlon released a statement, saying, “It is with deep sadness that we can inform that two participants (one from Mexico; one from Britain) have died at the World Triathlon Torremolinos-Andalucía AG Sprint Distance World Championships, taking place today, October 17.”
The organisation continued by saying, “Our deepest condolences go to their respective family, friends, National Federations and all the triathlon family …World Triathlon, the Spanish Federation and the LOC are in contact with their families and NFs to provide all the support needed in these difficult and sad times.”
More than 5,500 triathletes from more than 80 countries flocked to Torremolinos to take part in the event.
