British hiker found dead in the Canary Islands
The 53-year-old is believed to have been trying to reach a viewpoint on Gran Canaria
A 53-year-old British hiker tragically died in the Canary Islands after venturing out to reach a scenic viewpoint on Gran Canaria's Pico de Las Nieves (Snow Peak), one of the archipelago's tallest peaks standing at 6,394 feet above sea level.
According to reports, the hiker's disappearance was reported by his wife on Monday evening, January 22, at around 5pm, prompting a search effort that had to be called off once it got dark. The search resumed early the following morning, and sadly, the hiker's body was discovered in a difficult-to-access area during the early afternoon.
Local authorities, including Guardia Civil officers, firefighters, and Civil Protection personnel, were involved in the recovery efforts.
An investigation into the death of the British man is currently underway. According to police sources, the initial findings suggest that the incident was an accident. The dead man is thought to have been on holiday in the area, although police are yet to make any further announcements.
A spokesperson for the regional emergency services coordination centre confirmed the details:
"Around 1pm an emergency and rescue helicopter located the body of a man who had died and after receiving judicial authorisation, evacuated it a car park at the viewpoint at Pico de Las Nieves so the Guardia Civil could take over.
"The alarm had been raised around 5pm on Tuesday. The information received was that a person had gone walking from the lookout at Pico de las Nieves and hadn't returned.
"The search operation was launched immediately."
Once considered the highest peak in Gran Canaria, Pico de Las Nieves was surpassed by Morro de la Agujereada, a nearby mountain discovered to be 19 feet taller. The viewpoint at the top of the mountain is popular with hikers arriving by car, bike or on foot.
Despite its name, Pico de Las Nieves rarely experiences any snowfall.
