ARCHIVED - Blue shark sighted in Villa Joyosa found dead in El Campello
Three coastal municipalities in the province of Alicante have reported shark sightings over the past few days
A blue shark, which was sighted on Friday (August 13) in two coastal municipalities in Alicante, was found dead on Saturday morning near Cala Mig in El Campello.
The beach at Cala Bol Nou in Villa Joyosa was closed to bathers on Friday morning for several hours after the marine animal was sighted.
That same day, at around 4.30pm, the shark was seen again in the nearby municipality of El Campello, where it turned up lifeless the following day.
Beach cleaning services have removed the carcass, which will be given to the appropriate authorities to be disposed of.
On Thursday, August 12, a similar sized blue shark caused panic on a packed Benidorm beach after it was seen swimming just metres away from the shore and, although it is not confirmed, experts from the Oceanografic Foundation strongly believe that it was the same shark as the one found dead in El Campello.
The main hypothesis is that the blue shark (Prionace glauca) swam so close to the shore due to some kind of illness or injury.
