ARCHIVED - Benidorm to invest 2.6 million improving access in residential areas
Pavements will be widened and road safety improved in the Foietes and Els Tolls areas of Benidorm in the Marina Baixa comarca, Alicante province.
Pedestrian mobility in two of Benidorm's highly populated areas is to be stepped up with an investment of €2.6 million.
The council has put out to tender two projects which aim to promote sustainable mobility in the Foietes and Els Tolls areas of the popular resort, by creating wider, safer and more accessible pavements "that invite people to walk or cycle rather than drive".
The "overall image" will also be improved with new street furniture and planting.
In the upper area of Foietes, work will centre around calles Estació, Capitán Cortés, Rejoneador Ginés Cartagena and Plaza del Prelado Antonio Bayona.
"We are talking about an area with a significant volume of residents and pedestrian traffic due to the proximity of three schools and the Guillermo Amor Sports Stadium, and in which to date no major renovation works have been carried out," said the local authority.
Pavements will be increased by up to a metre, obviously reducing the width of the roads, and new street lighting will be installed.
The “most emblematic and visual” performance will take place in the Plaza del Prelado Antonio Bayona, which “will be completely renovated, making homes fully accessible, increasing pedestrian space and creating green areas.
Work is expected to take 11 months.
Meanwhile, "comprehensive renovations" in the Els Tolls areas - in particular Avenidas Andalucia, Francia, Inglaterra and Italia - is likely to take around 15 months as this will also involve improvements to the sewerage network.
The local authority plans to "eliminate double traffic directions to gain pedestrian space" and "reduce dangerous crossings in the residential and high-traffic school areas".
The two schemes are the first of a number of projects in the pipeline.
There are also plans to build a youth hostel, a camping area and an interpretation centre in Parque de the Séquia Mare, while the bullring will be upgraded and new cultural and social spaces built in its surroundings.
