ARCHIVED - Benidorm police vehicles kitted out with semi-automatic defibrillators
The life-saving equipment will allow officers to act quickly in the event of cardiac arrests in the Marina Baixa municipality, Alicante province
Ten Benidorm Local Police vehicles have each been kitted out with a semi-automatic defibrillator (DESA) to allow officers to respond quickly to cases of cardiac arrest across the popular resort.
The life-saving equipment is primarily designed to be used by medical professionals or rescue workers, and as such officers have completed a training course to enable the police force to provide a "rapid emergency service to residents and tourists".
"The defibrillators are essential taking into account that speed is a vital factor to increase the survival rate and minimise the consequences in the event of cardiac arrest," explains Benidorm Council.
Five patrol cars, an SUV and four motorcycles have been equipped with the devices to reduce response times and cover all kinds of situations that may occur in the town and in rural areas.
Eighty per cent of cardiac arrests take place in homes or on public roads where it's only possible to offer immediate assistance through the use of defibrillators.
