ARCHIVED - Benidorm pensioner robbed of 1,800-euro necklace using sneaky stain method
A man and a woman have been arrested following the street theft in the Marina Baixa resort in Alicante province

A man and a woman, aged 30 and 50, have been arrested in Benidorm after an elderly woman was robbed of a gold chain worth 1,800 euros using a sneaky technique called the 'stain method'.
Basically, the suspects allegedly sprayed some sort of liquid on targets' clothing before offering to clean it, a sly method of distraction which allowed them to steal valuables or cash.
During a patrol in the centre of the popular coastal resort, officers from Benidorm's Foreigners and Borders police unit spotted the detainees standing "too close" to an elderly couple and became suspicious.
The man had his arm around the elderly woman's neck, preventing her from moving, whilst the arrested woman appeared to be wiping her with a handkerchief.
The cops decided to check on what was happening and the elderly couple told them they were approached by a man and a woman who pointed out a large grey and green stain on their backs, offering to help them clean it.
Once they had identified the two suspects, a police check revealed they were both subject to warrants from different courts.
At first, the victims told police nothing of value was missing, but once their personal belongings had been checked the woman noticed that she was missing a gold chain with a diamond pendant valued at 1,800 euros.
The necklace was later found nearby and the two detainees were arrested on suspicion of theft.
Back at Benidorm police station, a jar containing a pasty liquid mixed with green ink, simulating bird droppings, was found inside the woman's handbag.
The case has been handed to Benidorm Magistrates' Court and an investigation is ongoing to identify any other possible victims.
