ARCHIVED - Benidorm insurance broker scammed clients with bogus policy charges
The boss and Russian member of staff at the brokers in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province, allegedly defrauded at least 36 clients out of 70,000 euros

The manager and an employee of an insurance brokers in Benidorm have been arrested accused of scamming at least 36 clients out of tens of thousands of euros over the last four years through bogus policy charges.
The Guardia Civil in Villajoyosa received a number of complaints from alleged victims, predominantly Russian, earlier this year and Operation Dengi-1 was launched, revealing that the two women had used their acquired knowledge of the insurance firm's computer and management system to make fake policy charges or financial modifications.
The clients were completely oblivious to the hikes and at no time consented to paying them, according to police sources.
The employee is believed to have used her Russian nationality to "gain the trust of present and future" victims, most of whom are also Russian, and once they had been "recruited", the clients were asked to make a bank transfer to the members of staff's personal account.
The cash was then handed over to the insurance broker's manager, who in turn gave a cut to the employee.
During the investigation, officers discovered the pair had allegedly been pocketing money paid out for fake policy price rises since 2017, estimated to be at least 70,000 euros. Another insurance company is amongst the victims, and further injured parties have not been ruled out.
