ARCHIVED - Benidorm extends collection of emergency aid for Ukraine
The coastal town in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province, has also set up a register for people who want to make their homes available to Ukrainian refugees
Benidorm has been rallying to support the victims of Russia's relentless attacks on Ukraine, with four collection points set up across the vital emergency donations.
Initially, the drop-off points were going to be open for a week, but for the second time, the Town Hall has decided to extend their operation as the humanitarian crisis continues.
Until Friday March 18, donations can be dropped off at the Palau d'Esports, Casa del Fester and La Torreta and José Llorca Linares social between 9am and 8pm, as well as at the town's education centres.
"As was the case last week, at the moment we need, fundamentally, medical material for first aid and also non-perishable foodstuffs, hygiene and shelter material," explained Benidorm Mayor, Toni Pérez.
Medical supplies requested include: dressings, plasters, bandages, ointments for burns, thermal blankets, syringes with needles of different volumes, anti-burn hydrogel bandages, immobilisation tapes, sterile material for the treatment of wounds, thermometers, scissors for cutting clothes and shoes, painkillers and antipyretics for reducing fevers.
"Although at the moment the clothing needs appear to be covered, thermal underwear is needed due to the harsh weather conditions", said Pérez, adding that the Ukrainian Consulate in Valencia has also requested personal hygiene items, including toothpaste, razors and tampons.
In addition to collecting vital aid, Benidorm Town Hall has set up a register for people who want to make their homes available to Ukrainian refugees.
To register, fill in the form on the municipal website or contact the RAC telephone number 900 701 322. This telephone number is also available to groups or companies organising material collections or wishing to make a contribution.
Anybody who would like to make a financial donation can also do so through any of the following accounts set up by the Red Cross:
