Belgian driver arrested for doubling the speed limit on Orihuela Costa motorway
The motorist was clocked going 200 kilometres per hour on the AP-7 towards Alicante
A 48-year-old Belgian driver is under investigation for a crime against road safety after being caught speeding at 200 kilometres per hour on a section of the AP-7 toll motorway in Orihuela Costa. Incredibly, the motorist was travelling at almost double the legal speed limit of 110 kilometres, putting himself and other road users at extreme risk.
According to the Traffic division of the Guardia Civil, the incident occurred on Sunday February 18 at kilometre point 767,200 of the AP-7 towards Alicante, within the municipality of Orihuela. Officers from the Torrevieja Traffic Detachment were carrying out a routine speed control operation at the time in an effort to reduce the number of victims on this section of the road.
After being caught on radar, the Belgian driver was subsequently stopped and identified. This incident has been escalated to the Court of Instruction number 1 of Orihuela and the motorist could potentially face a prison sentence of 3 to 6 months, a fine of 6 to 12 months or community service of 31 to 90 days. Additionally, the driver could lose his license to operate motor vehicles for a period of more than 1 year and up to 4 years.
The Civil Guard stresses that inappropriate or excessive speed, along with distractions and alcohol consumption, is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents. Such behaviour greatly increases the likelihood of human error behind the wheel, putting the safety of all road users at risk.
