ARCHIVED - Beaches and coves in Villajoyosa closed for Noche de San Juan
The coastline will be closed to the public to prevent San Juan celebrations in Villajoyosa in the Marina Baixa comarca, Alicante province.
For the second year running, all beaches and coves in Villajoyosa will be closed to the public on the night of San Juan on June 23 to avoid traditional bonfire celebrations along the 15km coastline.
In line with a region wide ban on Las Hogueras de San Juan beach bonfires in Valencia, access to the sandy beaches and coves in Villajoyosa will be prohibited from 6pm until 6am the following morning to "prevent the crowds of people who normally gather".
In addition, all beach lifeguard and monitoring services will be suspended at the following beaches: Carritxal, Xarco, La caleta, L'esparrelló, Bol nou, Paradís sur, Paradís camping, Puntes del moro, Centro, Varadero, Estudiants, Tio roig, Torres i Racó del conill.
To make sure the public complies with the beach ban, police will patrol the coastline on foot and on motorbikes, with the support of air surveillance, and will take "appropriate action where necessary".
And they will be backed up by teams from the Civil Protection, DYA lifeguard service and Valencia region's Auxiliaries of Beaches, while a social media and schools' campaign has been launched to get the message across.
Despite the fact that the health situation is noticeably better this year than in 2020, "the uncontrolled celebration of this festival could pose a risk to public health", and until the health situation is reversed, the "recommendations of the ministry of health will be enforced favouring prevention over celebrations" says the council in a statement.
