ARCHIVED - Bathers try to boot child with special needs and support dog off Torrevieja beach
Association of Parents of Students with Special Educational Needs hits out at "very rude" bathers in the Vega Baja, Alicante province.
The mother of a child with special needs was left distraught and suffering from anxiety after a group of bathers "very rudely" told her son his assistance dog was not allowed on a stretch of sand between Cala Mosca and Punta Prima beaches in Torrevieja, and that he had to leave.
According to the Association of Parents of Students with Special Educational Needs, Apanee de Torrevieja, the group, "with very bad manners" repeatedly told the child dogs are banned from the beach, pointing out signposts which they argued clearly state this.
As the boy and his mother became more upset, police were forced to intervene and assured that assistance dogs are exempt from the beach restrictions.
"The group of swimmers' bad manners triggered an anxiety attack" as the child's mother became more distraught, says Apanee, whilst urging people to be more tolerant.
"We ask for tolerance and empathy in these situations, as assistance dogs are absolutely necessary for people to be able to socialise in an independent and positive way."
