ARCHIVED - Bat nesting box and shelter installed at Espinardo environmental education park
Youngsters are encouraged to recognize the role of bats in limiting nocturnal insect populations
As a result of a donation from the ANSE naturalists’ association the Huertos de Ocio area in Espinardo, a facility run by Joven Futura on the northern outskirts of the city of Murcia, has installed a bats refuge in the cypress trees alongside their base close to the Terra Natura wildlife park.
Bats are of great importance in improving the quality of life for humans, among other things due to the insects that they eat as part of their natural diet. They are the most important predators of nocturnal insects, including many which can transmit disease or represent a threat to crops and woodland.
The mammals often inhabit and breed in hollows in mature tree trunks in Murcia, and the bat shelters offered by ANSE are intended to complement these natural homes.
