ARCHIVED - Bars targetted in week long crime spree in Torrevieja
Suspect caught "red-handed" in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, covered tattoos with napkins to avoid being recognised.
A 48-year-old man has been arrested in connection with 10 break-ins at bars, restaurants, hotels and 24-hour shops in Torrevieja, carried out in the space of a week.
Using a screwdriver or knife to force open shutters before smashing windows and doors to get into the premises, the detainee allegedly stole tip jars, cash registers and alcohol.
The raids occurred in early July, when the Guardia Civil reportedly caught the suspect "red-handed", accompanied by a minor, trying to break into a hotel in the town during the early hours. He was arrested and charged with two robberies and two counts of theft before being released.
But days later, on July 15, a warrant was requested to search his home after further establishments were targeted - five in one night - and police found "numerous items" which suggested he was responsible for a further six burglaries.
The items included a shoulder bag containing "tools to force open doors and cash registers", a cap, knee pads and napkins "used to cover his tattoos", and woolly hats.
The alleged thief was arrested and appeared in court where he was remanded straight into custody while police investigate whether the 48-year-old is responsible for other burglaries in the area.
