Area around Cartagena shopping mall Espacio Mediterraneo gets a massive facelift
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The new owner of Parque Mediterráneo has launched a comprehensive renovation to improve the facilities
The Parque Mediterráneo is going to undergo a profound transformation in the coming months to give greater prominence to pedestrians with a plan to widen avenues, reorganise road traffic and create shaded areas, among other things, according to new French owner Frey, which purchased the site last year.
In a meeting with the mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, Frey’s acquisitions and asset management manager for Spain and Portugal, Jorge Cano, and the manager of Parque Mediterráneo, José María Pascual del Riquelme, stated that the work to make the area more sustainable and more pleasant for customers began this Tuesday November 7.
Both directors pointed out that the project is based on the French ‘Promenade’ concept, which the French company is implementing in all the commercial spaces it owns.
The deadline set for completion of this work is for 9 months, so around July 2024.
Arroyo said the project “will mark a new stage for the large commercial and leisure area that we have in Cartagena”, which also receives visitors from neighbouring towns, especially from the coast.
She also stressed, “It is in line with making a more accessible and sustainable city.”
In the 200,000 square metres of Parque Mediterráneo, new paths will be created for pedestrians and the avenues in front of stores will be expanded, with the aim of improving the connection by foot between the 32 medium and large stores that are located around the shopping centre, in addition to the 105 located inside the Espacio Mediterráneo centre.
They also plan to remodel the storefronts and plant trees that will provide more shade. In addition, there will be a large children’s area in the centre, and they will revamp the car park with spaces to recharge electric vehicles, more disabled parking spots and improved road markings “with the aim of increasing traffic safety and vehicle accessibility”.
