ARCHIVED - Saharan dust paints Murcia and Alicante sky orange
The dust is expected to blanket much of Spain all week
An orange haze has descended on much of Murcia and Alicante on Monday March 14 as the promised storm Celia has delivered early, with banks of Saharan dust dramatically reducing visibility and turning the afternoon sky to sunset.
After the Atlantic front of the last few days passed over Spain, it was replaced by an air mass with high concentrations of suspended dust which the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicts will hang around for most of the week, creating muddy rain in areas where wet weather is due.
For the rest, the phenomenon promises to blanket gardens, streets and cars in a thick layer of orange dust.
Emergencias San Pedro del Pinatar has advised anyone with respiratory diseases to avoid spending too much time outdoors during this period; the dust can often irritate the eyes, which should be flushed out with drinking water. In addition, wells, exterior containers and ponds should be covered, as should any open water storage receptacles and animal bowls, to avoid contamination.
