ARCHIVED - Ex-king of Spain faces harassment lawsuit in the UK
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
UK court rules that the former king of Spain does not have legal immunity
The High Court in London has ruled on Thursday March 24 that Spain’s King Emeritus Juan Carlos I does not have legal immunity in England after his abdication in 2014 and therefore, the harassment lawsuit brought against him by his ex-lover, Danish socialite and businesswoman Corinna Larsen, can proceed.
Ms Larsen, who had an unofficial 5-year affair with the ex-monarch, has accused Juan Carlos of using the crown’s money to carry out unlawful surveillance of her UK home and paying members of Spain’s spy agency to break into her house, one time even leaving a book about Princess Diana’s death on her coffee table.

As part of her lawsuit, Ms Larsen has asked for compensation for the costs of her mental health treatment, for the “installation of personal security measures and daily protection services” and for the hiring of “former diplomats and former government officials” to “end the harassment” she claims to have endured at the hands of the former king.
Judge Matthew Nicklin today ruled that Juan Carlos does not have immunity under either Spanish or British law, despite the arguments of his own legal team that he could not be prosecuted as a member of the Spanish Royal Family for acts he committed when he was still king of Spain.
However, Judge Nicklin concluded that “none of the grounds for which state immunity was claimed has been demonstrated,” and therefore, the harassment lawsuit will proceed.
Juan Carlos stepped down as king in 2014, allowing his son to become King Felipe VI, and as he “is no longer sovereign or head of state,” the judge ruled that the emeritus has no right to legal immunity.
