ARCHIVED - British sail boat attacked by killer whales in A Guarda, Spain
The vessel suffered a broken rudder in the attack off the north west coast of Spain
The British sailboat ‘Extra Mile’, with two crew members on board, was attacked by a group of orcas, more commonly known as killer whales, about five miles northwest of A Guarda in Pontevedra on Thursday September 30.
According to the Maritime Rescue team, the boat, located off the coast of Galicia, suffered a broken rudder and requested assistance to be towed back to shore.
The Salvamar Mirach patrol boat was dispatched and accompanied the sailboat back to safety to the Pontevedra municipality of Cangas.
Sightings of killer whales have increased over the summer months in Spain, with the rich fishing grounds and abundant marine life making Galician waters in particular an attractive prospect for the hungry predators.
