ARCHIVED - April 16 Dramatized tour of Cabezo Gordo in Torre Pacheco
Visit the home of Neanderthal Man in the mountain of Cabezo Gordo
Over the years the mountain of Cabezo Gordo in the municipality of Torre Pacheco has become one of the most important paleontological and cultural sites in the Region of Murcia, after it was found that it is home to the second most important focus of Neanderthal remains in Spain. This is the pit of La Sima de las Palomas, which is outshone in this country only by the world-renowned site of Atapuerca in the northern province of Burgos.
This visit takes walkers to a viewing point right next to the Sima de las Palomas, looking out over the crop fields of the Campo de Cartagena and the Mar Menor, and also includes the Cueva del Agua. This is an old mining area with a natural lake, and inside it is inhabited nowadays by bats!
The visit on April 16 begins at 10.00 at the car parking area on the southern slope of Cabezo Gordo and lasts for around two and a half hours. Drinking water, a torch, a cap and sturdy footwear are recommended, and the price of registration is just 3 euros.
Bookings can be made online here.
Further information is available from the tourist office of Torre Pacheco (CAES, Paseo Villa Esperanza, 13, telephone 968 579937, email turismo@torrepacheco.es).
