Andalucia town beats Vigo to become the first in Spain to turn on its Christmas lights
The little Sevilla town, famous for its sweet Christmas treats, has taken the lead ahead of some of the big hitters

Estepa, the Sevillian town famous for its mantecados (shortbread cookies), has this year jumped the gun on the Christmas calendar: last Friday, November 7, at 7.30pm, its streets were illuminated after the official ceremony held in the Plaza del Carmen, making the town the first municipality in Spain to turn on its Christmas lights this year.
According to municipal sources, the big switch-on was planned this early with the aim of creating a festive atmosphere in the town from the beginning of November, hopefully giving a boost to local businesses and tourism, which are closely linked to the production of mantecados and polvorones, a type of Spanish shortbread, popular around Christmas.
Estepa has installed a spectacular light display, with more than a million LED lights, illuminating its streets and squares.
The Sevilla town narrowly pipped Vigo to the post, as the Galician city is usually way ahead of the competition. They haven’t been resting on the laurels though. Vigo has been investing in a spectacular light display in recent years, attracting thousands of visitors each festive season. This year's installation began months ago, and the official switch-on is scheduled for Saturday November 15.
While they might be behind Estepa, Vigo’s Yuletide display promises to be as unusual as it is spectacular. This year's display will feature a musical theme "with more than 200 songs, including tracks in various languages, especially English and Spanish, but also Galician, Portuguese, French, and Italian," according to local sources.
Vigo, under the leadership of Mayor Abel Caballero, has become the most talked-about city for its 'obsession' with Christmas. In 2024, the streets boasted more than 11 million lights and hundreds of decorative motifs, figures that explain why the city usually makes headlines when the festive season begins, which seems to start earlier each year.
This year, despite Vigo's hard work, Estepa has managed to beat them to it and claim the spotlight on the first day of the Christmas lights.
