ARCHIVED - Although masks not required in open-air after June 26, they must still be worn in some situations
Spain is following in France’s footsteps and eliminating the need to wear a mask outside, but only in certain situations.
Spain will be relaxing the rules on facemasks as of Saturday 26 June, meaning they will no longer be compulsory outdoors, Health Minister Carolina Darias confirmed on Wednesday.
However, the minister explained that there are certain conditions, meaning citizens will still be required to carry a mask at all times to pop on if they need to.
While not required in open, outdoor spaces where 1.5-metre social distancing can be maintained, or in the company of cohabitants, masks will still have to be worn on busy streets and other places that get crowded. They will also be required at public events while standing but can be removed if seated and at least 1.5 metres away from other citizens.
Although several regional governments have said they are against the measure and will still be encouraging citizens to wear their masks regardless, Sra Darias has reiterated that the new relaxed rules are nationwide and must be applied everywhere in Spain.
The new rules were ratified by the Cabinet on Thursday.
In brief:
Masks must still be worn outdoors as follows.
1. At large outdoor events and those events at which attendees are standing, such as concerts, demonstrations and sporting events.(Note, this is also likely to be enforced at busy street markets).
2. In open-air events where attendees are seated, but the safety distance of 1.5 meters is not guaranteed, a mask must be worn.
3. In means of transport such as buses, subways, air and rail transport, cable car or boat.
4. In social health centers when the number of people fully vaccinated is less than 80%. Both workers and visitors must wear masks
5. In closed spaces for public use and in closed places that are open to the public (ie inside buildings, shops etc).
NB: This does mean that masks do not need to be worn on beaches when walking around or when sunbathing.
Please note; all other restrictions applied by individual regional health authorities will still apply which vary by region.
