ARCHIVED - Almost threefold rise in cases in a week: Valencia Covid update March 30
9,321 infections reported in Alicante province and the rest of the region compared to 3,655 a week ago
Coronavirus figures have rebounded across Spain over the last seven days following weeks of a steady fall in new infections. Consequently, after plateauing somewhat, the incidence rate has begun to creep up again.
And the Valencia region is no exception. The Ministry of Health is now only releasing updates twice weekly, and in the latest health data (Tuesday March 29), 9,321 infections have been reported since Friday March 25 – almost three times higher than the 3,655 infections seven days earlier.
In terms of active cases, these have leapt by 10,000 in a week to 25,065, and whilst the 14-day cumulative incidence rate remains below the national average of 461.86 per 100,000, it has risen to 400.27 after weeks of decline.
On a positive note, whilst there has been a slight increase in hospital admissions, the number of critically ill patients in the ICU has fallen.
Coronavirus cases
The regional Ministry of Health has reported 9,321 new cases since the last update on Friday March 25 when 10,781 new infections were reported (over a three-day period). This brings the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,347,968 people.
By province, 713 have been reported in Castellón (160,365 in total), 1,802 in Alicante (466,850) and 6,806 in Valencia (720,748). The number of unassigned cases remains at five.
According to the health data, there are currently 25,065 active cases, up significantly from 20,285 on Friday and 15,110 last Tuesday, which represents 1.84% of the total positives.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 451 people admitted to hospital with Covid, 14 more than on Friday, 33 of them in ICU (seven fewer): 52 in the province of Castellón, 2 in the ICU; 137 in the province of Alicante, 12 of them in ICU; and 262 in the province of Valencia, 19 in ICU.
4,531 people have overcome the virus since the last update, which means the total number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic now stands at 1,325,182.
By provinces, the recoveries are distributed as follows: 158,814 in Castellón, 460,706 in Alicante and 705,604 in Valencia. The number of unassigned cases stands at 58.
Fatalities
Ten Covid-related deaths have been reported since the last update. All of the deaths occurred in the last seven days with the exception of one in February, and bring the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in the Valencia region to 9,162: 1,057 in the province of Castellón, 3,491 in Alicante and 4,614 in Valencia.
The deceased are five women aged between 65- and 93-years-old and five men aged between 65 and 90.
