ARCHIVED - Alicante firm sells plastic bag for whopping 499 euros
The extortionately priced carrier bag is at the centre of the Costa Blanca company's campaign to highlight society's "throwaway culture"
Whilst governments are introducing new laws to end society's "throwaway culture", including hiking charges on single-use items such as bags and straws, an Alicante firm has given "value" to the humble carrier bag and stuck a 499 euro price tag on it.
The company, which specialises in the online sale of ethical and sustainable packaging solutions in paper and fabric, has launched La Bolsa Granel® (bulk-buy bag), a bag made of polyethylene that has its own website and social media platforms featuring a fashion video in which a number of models are filmed posing with it.

The campaign aims to draw attention to society's "throwaway culture" and consumption habits by "giving value to something we value very little", a plastic bag.
"This is an object that we do not hesitate to throw away quickly, since the average use we make of each of the plastic bags we consume is just 12 minutes, which is nothing in comparison to the 150 years it takes for the same bag to decompose.
"La Bolsa Granel, however, can be used up to 500 times, but the only difference between this bag and any other is that by incorporating a logo, and transforming it into a luxury brand, we turn it into an object of value and desire that we will not hesitate to use repeatedly. Quite the opposite of what we usually do when it comes to a common bag," explained the company, set up in 2009.
Today's consumer society is characterised by immediacy and speed, which the company claims translates into equally 'fast' and very cheap products with a shelf life of just a few minutes – products that satisfy a need immediately, but whose environmental impacts are unsustainable.
Despite the fact that in 2018 a Royal Decree came into force in Spain limiting the consumption of plastic bags, an average of 180 bags per inhabitant are disposed of each year.
Globally, according to the United Nations, five billion plastic bags are used every year and more than eight million tonnes of plastic end up in rivers, seas and oceans.
"In this sense, Bolsalea's commitment is firm and clear: to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics and replace them as far as possible with other packaging solutions based on less polluting and environmentally aggressive materials, such as paper or fabric.
"We like to think that, within our means, we are doing our bit to make the world a more sustainable place for everyone. We hope that the message we wanted to convey through the Bolsa Granel® will stir people's consciences and invite reflection," said Marina Moya, CEO of Bolsalea.
