ARCHIVED - Alicante police close Santa Barbara Castle due to strong winds
For safety reasons, the historic attraction in Alicante is closed until further notice
Alicante province remains on yellow alert for strong winds and coastal phenomena, and as a safety precaution, Local Police made the decision to close Santa Barbara Castle on Wednesday December 8 as gusts reached 70km/h.
And with Force 7 winds forecast for the next couple of days, the fortress will remain closed to the public until further notice.
In addition to waves of up to three metres in coastal areas, such as Alicante, temperatures dropped on Wednesday, ranging between seven and 19 degrees Celsius across the province, with lows of eight degrees in Alcoy and nine degrees in Orihuela.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the province can expect cloudy intervals throughout Thursday December 9, and temperatures are likely to remain unchanged.
And on Friday, west and northwest winds will continue in the interior of Alicante, with maximum gusts of 70km/h. Coastal and inland Valencia can expect much the same with Force 7 winds for much of the day.
The closure of the castle comes just days after it was announced the shuttle bus service to and from the castle will be reinstated this month, a year-and-a-half after it as cancelled due to the pandemic.
