ARCHIVED - Alicante pensioner accused of two-month tyre-slashing spree
The 71-year-old allegedly punctured at least 28 tyres of vehicles parked in the same street in Los Montesinos
A 71-year-old man is accused of a two-month tyre-slashing spree targeting dozens of vehicles parked in the same street in Los Montesinos in Alicante.
The vandalism escalated to the point that residents were forced to park elsewhere "out of fear", according to police sources.
Police began an investigation last December when numerous victims reported flat tyres which appeared to have been punctured with a screwdriver, all in the vicinity of a property belonging to a relative of the accused where he reportedly spent his evenings.
"In total, seven complaints have been filed for 28 minor offences of damage, which have created great social alarm among the residents of the area," according to police sources.
All the vehicles were vandalised in the same 25-metre stretch of street, and on each occasion, a right-hand tyre had been slashed.
Most of the complainants pointed to the same person, but lacked evidence. However, investigations led police to identify the pensioner who faces charges of a continuous offence of criminal damage.
Although police are probing into offences committed since last December, neighbours claim the spree began in 2019.
It's not clear exactly how many cars were vandalised, as many incidents have not been reported, say police, but on each occasion, the alleged perpetrator used the same modus operandi.
Taking advantage of the absence of passers-by during the evenings, armed with a bucket containing a screwdriver, the pensioner is accused of puncturing the front and rear tyres of vehicles parked in front of his relative's house.
The case is now in the hands of the Courts of Instruction in Torrevieja.
