ARCHIVED - Alicante hosts first San Juan shop window contest to boost local trade
The aim is to lift spirits and draw shoppers into Alicante city's stores on Spain's Costa Blanca.
Alicante city is hosting its first ever festival-themed shop window competition to attract shoppers and create a "fireside festive atmosphere".
Competing stores are asked to create striking window displays along the theme of 'Las Hogueras de San Juan' (the bonfires of San Juan) - one of Alicante's main festivals, officially declared of International Tourist Interest, which sadly won't be celebrated this month due to the pandemic and health concerns.
The traditional festival which attracts thousands to Alicante each year, won't be celebrated after the committees involved in organising the fiestas unanimously agreed to suspend the bonfire festivities until next year.
But to keep the spirit alive, competing shop windows will be decorated and unveiled to the public from June 18 to 30, and the jury's decision will be made the first week of July.
A dozen cash prizes are up for grabs, with the winner scooping €3,000 and the runner-up €2,000 with a further 10 prizes of €1,000 each.
As well as lifting spirits, the aim is to give the local economy a much-needed boost by encouraging locals and tourists to visit the area and spend money locally.
