Alhama de Murcia contracts provide more money for local charities

The Town Hall is working to strengthen social and cultural support through new agreements with NGOs

Alhama de Murcia Town Council has taken a significant step in supporting vulnerable residents and enriching the cultural life of the municipality through four newly signed collaboration agreements.

Among the initiatives is the a 12,000-euro grant to the charity ‘Un Poco es Mucho’ (A Little Goes a Long Way). This partnership, signed by the mayoress, María Cánovas, and the association's president, Juan José Ballesta, focuses on providing essential food and hygiene products to families facing economic hardship or social exclusion.

The funding will cover operational costs such as facility rentals, transportation and the purchase of goods, ensuring the charity can maintain its equitable approach to supporting needy local families and those in vulnerable housing situations. By offering this financial assistance upfront, the council guarantees the continuity of the charity’s critical services.

This agreement demonstrates the council’s commitment to addressing poverty and exclusion by working closely with grassroots organisations that provide lifelines to the community.

Further bolstering efforts to assist vulnerable families, the council has signed an agreement with Cáritas Interparroquial, granting 8,000 euros. This funding supports the charity’s food distribution programme and initiatives promoting social integration, such as Spanish classes for immigrants.

Cáritas will use the grant to procure food, hygiene products and educational materials, ensuring that families in need can access basic essentials while fostering their long-term inclusion in the community.

On the cultural front, the council is backing the Audite Omnes Choir Association with a 6,000-euros grant aimed at promoting choral music in Alhama de Murcia and beyond. This support will fund concerts, festivals and educational projects, encouraging children and adults to engage with classical and choral music.

The choir also plans to organise humanitarian events and recordings, spreading its impact across the region and further enriching the town’s cultural offerings.

Finally, the council has partnered with the Archconfraternity of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, granting 6,000 euros to promote Alhama de Murcia’s renowned Easter Week celebrations. The funding will support processions, exhibitions and educational initiatives, with a goal of achieving national recognition for the event.

These agreements highlight Alhama de Murcia’s holistic approach to community welfare. By addressing urgent social issues while investing in culture and heritage, the council aims to strengthen the fabric of the municipality’s social life, ensuring it remains both compassionate and vibrant.

Alhama de Murcia Tourist information office is located on the edge of the Plaza de la Constitución, just a few metres away from the underground car park and the Town hall of Alhama de Murcia.

The tourist office offers free guided audiotours in English which take visitors around the historical sites of interest in Alhama. These be loaned at any time, although allow an hour and a half to complete the tour, and when loaning the audio equipment visitors are asked to leave passports or ID cards with the tourist office.

The office also carries a full range of leaflets for the archaeological museum of Los Baños, which is built around the historic spa which gives Alhama its name, and the mountains of Sierra Espuña, which is also an important area within the municipality of Alhama. Areas such as El Berro and Gebas have a number of interesting routes which can be followed and there are several picnic areas and good walking routes within the Sierra Espuña natural park.

The tourist office also carries leaflets for the many cultural events and fiestas which take place in Alhama throughout the year, including Los Mayos, Semana Santa, Christmas,the Romería of La Candelaria and the Auto de los Reyes Magos in El Berro.
