ARCHIVED - Albir beach accessible to people with reduced mobility for first time
An adapted walkway with chairs and assistance was introduced at the beach in the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province this summer
More than 60 people with reduced mobility have been able to enjoy Albir beach in comfort and safety this summer after an accessibility and assistance service was introduced for the first time.
The new service offers amphibious chairs and crutches and an adapted walkway directly to the seashore.
“The amphibious crutches have allowed absolute freedom to people with reduced mobility, and the chair means they have been able to enter the water assisted by specialised staff. Many users entered the water in the chair and even dared to get off it and enjoy the sea in a safe environment,” said the local council.
According to data from the lifeguard and surveillance service in Albir, since June 15 a total of 24 beachgoers requested bathing assistance using the amphibious chair, and 38 people were assisted with the help of crutches.
Albir beach is the latest attraction to be made accessible to all this year. Ramps and special walkways for wheelchairs have been installed at the popular Faro (lighthouse) route, along with reserved parking for disabled motorists.
