Aguilas celebrates its Patron Saint Day
The Virgen de los Dolores patron saint was paraded through the streets of the town last Friday for the occasion of the day of Our Lady of Sorrows

More than 600 people accompanied Águilas’s ‘Nuestra Señora de los Dolores’ (‘Our Lady of Sorrows’) this last Friday just gone, September 15, as the religious icon was paraded around the town on her special Saint’s name day.
The patron saint of Águilas left from the parish church of San José and was carried along Calle Coronel Pareja down to the seafront promenade, where an open-air Catholic mass was held by the parish priests Manuel Amatriaín and José Andrés Alcolea.
After the special religious ceremony, the image of the Virgin, carried on the shoulders of over a dozen volunteers, was safely and solemnly returned to the parish church of San José in procession along Calle Isaac Peral and Calle Juan Pablo I, accompanied by music from the group Agrupación Musical Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores.

One day after the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Catholic Church commemorates Our Lady of Sorrows, an invocation of the Virgin Mary also known as the Virgin of Sorrows.
As Águilas Town Hall themselves pointed out in a press release, “The succession of both events – the Exaltation of the Cross and Our Lady of Sorrows – is an invitation for Catholics to meditate on the mystery of the sorrow that united the lives of Mary and Jesus, source of the redemption of the human race through his sacrifice on the Cross.”
