ARCHIVED - Aguilas and Puerto Lumbreras worst affected by heavy rain on Monday
69mm of rain caused flooding in both municipalities
The storms on Monday arrived as predicted, leaving heavy rain in localised areas of the region.
Worst affected was Puerto Lumbreras, which received an astonishing 69mm in just one hour!
At the heaviest point of the downfall, 23 mm fell in just ten minutes, a torrential downpour which left flooding in many parts of the municipality, with drain covers lifted in many streets, basements flooded, the sports pavilion and football pitch under water, the rambla de Nogalte running and several motorists stranded in their vehicles.
In neighbouring Águilas, 30mm fell in an hour, flooding streets and overwhelming the water evacuation systems.
As was the case in Puerto Lumbreras, municipal services worked flat out to clear any blockages and facilitate the evacuation of the floodwater as quickly as possible.
Fortunately, there were no injuries in either municipality.
Elsewhere Caravaca and Calasparra both received 24mm; Mazarrón 21mm including heavy hail; Fuente Álamo 14mm; Alhama 7mm; Cartagena 3mm and Murcia city only 1mm.
