Águilas agrees new rules for using electric scooters
The ordinance to regulate personal mobility vehicles is to come into force this month
With an increase in the use of electric scooters around the town of Águilas, the council has taken it upon themselves to address the regulations involved with having these motorised vehicles on the road.
The September Plenary session approved a new Ordinance for this purpose, with the aim of providing security and promoting more sustainable mobility for those in the coastal town using what are formally known in Spain as Vehículos de Movilidad Personal (VMP).
After the relevant administrative work is complete the new laws will come into force on December 10. The regulations have come into place in order to create a safer means of transport for those that use the vehicle to get around town or go to work.
Below are the key points that have been addressed by the new regulations:
- The minimum age allowed to drive a VMP is 15 years
- The contracting and validity of civil liability insurance for the user and against third parties is required
- The use of a helmet is mandatory for all VMP users
- All users of VMPs regulated by the Ordinance must at all times respect the general traffic regulations established in the aforementioned ordinance, as well as other regulations and legislation in force regarding traffic, circulation of motor vehicles and road safety, circulating with due caution and diligence, avoiding damage to themselves or to other road users
- The circulation of VMPs on sidewalks, walkways, squares and other areas intended for the use of pedestrians and pedestrian priority areas is prohibited
