ARCHIVED - 180 Alicante-bound Ryanair passengers spend three hours trapped in flight corridor at Manchester Airport
Spanish and British travellers claim they were cooped up at the gate of the runway for hours waiting to board
Around 180 UK and Spanish passengers spent almost three hours trapped in an access corridor at Manchester Airport waiting for a connection bus to take them to their Alicante-bound Ryanair plane.
The flight was scheduled to take off at 6.30pm (UK time) on Sunday May 29, but finally left the runway at 9.10pm; the latest report of holiday travel chaos, delays and cancellations over the past few days.
The passengers, including elderly people and children, reportedly received no explanation from the budget airline which had started letting people through the boarding gate before the plane was ready.
One traveller who lives in Benidorm blasted the airline for its treatment of customers.
"They had us like sheep on the stairs of the tunnel that goes down to the runway so that we couldn't make any sort of complaint, because the air navigation law allows us to complain when the flight is delayed more than two hours."
There has been no official response from Ryanair, but the company previously sent an email to customers issuing guidance for passengers arriving at airports to ease queue chaos
Ryanair said: “Please arrive at the airport three hours prior to the departure of your Ryanair flight as we are experiencing security delays at the airport. Please note, that our boarding gates close 30 minutes prior to the departure of your flight.”
Meanwhile, TUI has urged passengers not to arrive at the airport too far in advance, claiming that this can contribute to delays at the terminal.
“We’d like to remind customers not to arrive at the airport too far in advance of their flight, as this can contribute to terminal queueing delays. Standard check-in opens at least two and a half hours before departure time for short and mid-haul flights, and at least three and a half hours before departure for long-haul flights.”
