ARCHIVED - 16th July to 1st August, the San Javier Jazz Festival returns to the shore of the Mar Menor
The Jayhawks and Monty Alexander top the bill in an edition dedicated to Chick Corea
One of the flagship cultural events of the summer in the Costa Cálida returns in July of this year after its forced suspension during the initial wave of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, with 15 groups and artists performing on 11 nights of live music as the San Javier Jazz Festival adapts its format to the current public health situation in Spain.
The 8 concerts which are to be held in the open-air Auditorio Parque Almansa during the 23rd edition of the festival are complemented by three more in street venues, with The Jayhawks and various representatives of Cuban music among the top acts. This year’s edition will also include the awarding of two special prizes to former festival director Alberto Nieto and the Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander, who performs live on Saturday 31st July.
After 35 years of performing and recording the Jayhawks are still celebrating the release of one of the most highly acclaimed discs of their career, “Back Roads and Abandoned Motels”, while another of the most widely recognized groups visiting the Costa Cálida is the pianist Brad Mehldau, who forms a trio with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard. Add to these Monty Alexander and the Dutch Surinamese soul musician Steffen Morrison, and it is clear that despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic the organizers have managed to put together a truly international offering.
