ARCHIVED - Over 450,000 kilos of food aid will be distributed in the Region of Murcia during June
This month Cruz Roja in the Murcia region will be giving food boxes and vouchers to over 28,000 individuals
The Covid pandemic has focused attention on the work of voluntary organisations who provide food relief for families struggling to make ends meet throughout the year, every year, and whose services have been more important than ever during the pandemic.
But even though economic activity has resumed, thousands of families are still struggling, as so many jobs have been lost during the last year and a half and businesses forced to close.
Cruz Roja, a non-governmental organization, has started the distribution of 452,596 kilos of food products to those in need in the Region of Murcia, as part of the 2021 Food Help program organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Nutrition.
The charity will be carrying out the distribution with the help of 92 entities in the Region: 16 local Cruz Roja headquarters, 55 Cáritas centres, 11 Town Halls and 10 distribution associations.
Food boxes, made up of basic, varied and nutritious non-perishable products, will be distributed to 28,026 disadvantaged people in the Region of Murcia. Some of the items included are rice, pasta, beans, tinned tuna, tomato sauce, biscuits and baby food.
In addition to the food baskets, food vouchers that can be used in different establishments in exchange for other more varied food products are also going to be distributed, which will allow families to have access to healthier food including fresh fruit and vegetables.
These vouchers are also useful in reducing the environmental impact and making the management and distribution of resources more efficient.
This program is cofinanced by the European Help Fund for Disadvantaged People (85 per cent) and by the national budget (15 per cent).
According to Cruz Roja, the number of people in need has multiplied by five in the last year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, making large donations from companies and public institutions especially important in this year’s campaign, which has also been supported by thousands of private individuals either making private financial donations or assisting in the food collections held in supermarkets during the last few months.
