Alicante hugger mugger arrested for the fifth time
The notorious thief mostly targeted elderly people all across Spain
The National Police in Alicante have arrested a notorious criminal who is wanted for countless crimes of theft up and down the country. The young woman, who has already been locked up on the Costa Blanca four times in recent months, is known as a hugger mugger or love thief.
Hugger muggers are so called because they swipe valuable watches and jewellery by walking up to their unsuspecting victims and embracing them, with the surprise tactic designed to distract the mark while the thief pockets the expensive goods.
Officers in Alicante quickly realised they were on to a repeat offender based on the physical description offered by the woman’s numerous victims, and the similarity of her method to previous reports.
According to police information, the Costa Blanca hugger mugger has been operating all over Spain and has filched around 5,000 euros worth of jewellery, often offering sexual favours to her victims before robbing them.
She generally targeted older people, favoured gold items and frequently changed her accent and appearance to avoid detection.
“The victims are usually very elderly men who are assaulted in the street by a woman who embraces them very effusively and kisses them on the mouth. The aim is to remove gold or silver chains from their necks or watches from their wrists,” the National Police explained in a statement.
