ARCHIVED - €280,000 to continue excavations of Roman Theatre in Gaudix, Granada
Excavations at the site of the Roman theatre in Gaudix, Granada province, Andalucia, has been underway since 2008.
Following more than 10 years of works to excavate the Roman theatre in Guadix, Granada, officials have announced a further €280,000 in funding is being made available to carry out further investigations of the site.
Regional Minister for Culture and Historical Heritage, Patricia del Pozo, announced that €30,000 has been allocated for restoring the decorative murals in the Accitan complex, and €250,000 to excavate the layout of the porticus post scaenam, a porticoed garden area accessed via a monumental gate located at the back of the stage.
The politician explained the funding has allowed experts to remove lichen, treat the top of the walls to allow rainwater to drain, to fix the walls, and to cover cracks and the edges of the mural paintings with lime mortar to secure them.
The works to the monumental gate will now include excavation of the inside of the portico and its fountains, sculptures and ponds, as well as of the eastern gallery.
The works to the theatre have been ongoing since 2008, with experts finding almost a hundred architectural elements, including bases, capitals, columns, cornices and a fountain, slowly uncovering the history of Guadix and Granada.
