ARCHIVED - Volunteers clean beach in Santiago de la Ribera, San Javier
World Cleaning Day saw young and old joined to clear up Barnuevo beach last Saturday
Volunteers of all ages came together to clear litter from the Barnuevo beach in Santiago de la Ribera on Saturday September 18. The initiative was part of a World Cleaning Day event organised by LIBERA Project and run by waste concessionary Ecoembes and SEO / BirdLife, which the San Javier city council has participated in for the fifth year running.
In the space of just one hour, children and adults alike collected floating waste from the seabed and beach, hundreds of cigarette butts, plastic and metal caps, a flip-flop, plastics, cans and much more besides. Meanwhile, another 19 clean-up events were taking places along different parts of the coast of Murcia, with the aim not only to clear up rubbish but also to raise awareness for individuals to pick up litter all year round.
The crucial role of protecting natural coastal habitats has been brought into even sharper relief this year after the ongoing contamination of the Mar Menor finally reached global attention when hundreds of fish washed up dead on the shore.
