ARCHIVED - Valencian government will consider reopening nightlife sector from September 6
The decision will depend on Covid health data in the region's three provinces, including Alicante
Valencian President Ximo Puig says the government's health department is considering proposals to reopen the nightlife sector from September 6 - provided Covid infections and hospital admissions continue to fall.
The region currently has the third lowest 14-day cumulative incidence rate in the country, which now stands at 312.48 cases per 100,000 inhabitants - below the national average of 378.13 - and there are currently 529 Covid patients being treated in hospital, a figure which has also fallen this week.
But despite the favourable data, the regional government last week extended capacity restrictions and nightly curfews in 68 municipalities until September 6 in a bid to prevent a further rebound.
However, following a meeting with the region's vice president, Monica Oltra, and the Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, on Wednesday, August 18, Puig said the government is considering a proposal from the nightlife business federation to "lift" restrictions imposed on the sector within the next three weeks.
Refusing to make a clear commitment, Puig said: "A prudent decision will be made but we still have to wait, because although the vaccination data is good and the objectives are being met, the hospital pressure is still slowly dropping and there is a high incidence in the ICUs."
