ARCHIVED - Valencia president rules out new restrictions amid Covid rebound
Ximo Puig warns the "most serious problem right now" is that 10% of the population in Alicante province and the rest of the region are not vaccinated
President of the Valencia region, Ximo Puig, has ruled out enforcing new anti-Covid measures despite a rebound in new daily cases and an increase in the cumulative incidence rate which now stands at 40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Instead, Puig has warned that the "most serious problem right now" is the fact that 10% of the population are not vaccinated, adding "the majority of people who die are, in one way or another, linked to non-vaccination".
"At the moment we are not thinking of taking any decision with regards to adopting new restrictions. There has been a rise in the number of positives and the cumulative incidence over the last week, but the region is still within a low level of infection.
However, he insisted that the pandemic "has not yet been overcome", but that "it is still very much with us".
"Day by day there are people who become infected and, above all, we still have 10% of the population who have not been vaccinated," stressed Puig, and urged anybody who is not yet immunised to "get vaccinated for themselves, for their families and the whole community."
With regards to extending the use of a Covid passport beyond the hospitality sector and festivals, Puig confirmed "it's an option that should be explored".
"We have been saying for some time that it would be a positive move, to encourage vaccination and, at the same time, to generate the maximum possible protection in spaces where there is some kind of contact that is more difficult to control than in other places.
"There are legal implications, but any decision will be made in agreement with the sectors and with prudence."
