ARCHIVED - Valencia region receives first delivery of Paxlovid oral Covid drug
Pfizer's oral medication is expected to reduce Covid-related hospital admissions on the Costa Blanca
Spain took delivery of 11,905 doses of Pfizer's Paxlovid oral medication on Monday, a drug which the manufacturer claims is 89% effective at preventing Covid hospitalisations when administered correctly.
The delivery is the first of four for distribution across the country's autonomous communities, and on Tuesday, the Valencia region received 1,271 treatments, which represents 10.7% of the total.
Specifically, the medication has been distributed at: La Fe Hospital in Valencia (648 doses); the Alicante General University Hospital (470 doses); and Castellón General Hospital (153 doses).
Paxlovid is an antiviral drug that is administered orally and was "conditionally" authorised by the European Commission on January 28. It's a combination drug whose active ingredients are nirmatrelvir (150 mg per tablet, pink in colour) and ritonavir (100 mg per tablet, white in colour).
