ARCHIVED - Valencia region first place in Spain to hit 35 degrees this year: Saturday May 15
Xativa in the Valencia region was less than one degree above Murcia on Saturday
We were warned it was going to be hot this weekend and the forecasters certainly got it right, with temperatures well over 30 degrees along much of the Mediterranean coastline.
Andalucía, Murcia and the Valencia region were the hottest places in Spain, as anticipated, and the closely fought battle for hottest location in Spain was won narrowly by Xátiva which gained dual victory, not only recording the highest temperature in Spain, but also becoming the first place in Spain to top 35 degrees Celsius in 2021, with a sizzling 35.2 degrees recorded at 17: 20 on Saturday afternoon.
Not far behind was the Murcia region which recorded 34.5 in Molina de Segura at 17:00 and 33.6 degrees in the capital city of Murcia at 17:30 and 33.5 in Cieza at the same time.
The Valencia region also occupied position three with 34.3 in Miramar; fourth position with 33.8 in Polinyá de Xúque and joint ninth position in Carcaixent and Ontinyent, both recording 33.1 degrees.
Proof that the high temperatures ran right along the Mediterranean coastline came from fifth position Tablada in Seville (Andalucía region) which racked up 33.7 degrees and Morón de la Frontera, also in Seville province, with 33.5, the same as Cieza in the Murcia region.
And to illustrate the geographical diversity of Spain; at the same time as the Mediterranean coast was racking up +30 degree temperatures, some points of Galicia in the north, managed to accumulate nearly 200 mm of rain (200 litres per square metre of land) within a 24 hour period!
As a point of interest, the warming of Spain is accelerating; the average temperature in Spain has increased by 1.3 degrees in the last 60 years and 1.7 degrees since the industrial era began.
The image posted by Rubén del Campo, was taken at 09:30 in the morning; at that same time the temperature was already 27.5 degrees Celsius in the Castellón Almassora observatory in the Castellón province of the Valencia region (which encompasses Alicante, Valencia and Castellón provinces).
